The copy editors are gone and the reporters are overloaded and hence making more mistakes.
I'm betting that the useless editorial department still has a copy editor.
What's missed in these trivial errors is the work copy editors did cleaning up articles and making them more readable. Or, a good copy editor can word edit your piece so that it fits on the page without having to gut half your piece. Everyone I worked with at The Star was a gem and a professional.
I recently went down to The Star building to see my old pals. I was shocked at what a ghost town it has become. I'm so glad I left when I did. The workload must be horrendous. Someone said to me that no one complains because they don't have time to have a pity party. They go in, do their work and go home. It's such a shame to see.
