The journalism trade journal Editor & Publisher is shutting down after 108 years of publication.
Editor & Publisher is being closed as its parent company, the Nielsen Co., sells several of its other business publications such as The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard.
I'll have more info later as it comes in.

Wow, that is actually pretty huge. 'Iceberg!'
Or, "canary in the coal mine!"
Anon 10:52/10:57 Bingo We have multiple winners!
There's not many professionals left to read it. And fewer in the near future. Too bad the lefty Poytner isn't going down instead.
Poynter is a complete joke, although it takes itself very serious. Most of us laugh at pointless Poynter and its pack of far left wingnuts.
They finally have their OBITUARY up on their own site:
‘Editor & Publisher’ to Cease
NEW YORK Editor & Publisher, the bible of the newspaper industry and a journalism institution that traces its origins back to 1884, is ceasing publication.
An announcement, made by parent company The Nielsen Co., was made Thursday morning as staffers were informed that E&P, in both print and online, was shutting down.
The outpouring of surprise and strong support for E&P that has followed across the Web — Editor & Publisher has even hit #4 as a Twitter trending topic — raises the notion that the publication might yet continue in some form.
Nielsen Business Media, of which E&P was a part, has forged a deal with e5 Global Media Holdings, LLC, a new company formed jointly by Pluribus Capital Management and Guggenheim Partners, for the sale of eight brands in the Media and Entertainment Group, including E&P sister magazines Adweek, Brandweek, Mediaweek, Backstage, Billboard, Film Journal International and The Hollywood Reporter. E&P was not included in this transaction.
As news spread of E&P’s fate, the staff has been inundated with calls from members of the industry it covers, mostly expressing shock or disbelief. They will stay on for the remainder of 2009.
Greg Mitchell, editor since 2002, has hailed the staff and their accomplishments. Some staff writers/editors have been at E&P for a quarter of a century. “I’m shocked that a way was not found for the magazine to continue it some form — and remain hopeful that this may still occur,” he said.
Editor & Publisher was launched in 1901 but traces its history to 1884 — it merged with the magazine The Journalist, which had started on that earlier date.
The lefties ran E&P in to the ground by turning it in to just another kook left site.
I’m waiting eagerly to hear these newly-out-of-work leftists complain bitterly about life in ‘Amerikkka’ under the inept and oppressive Obama regime...
Politics aside, it's a sad day E&P because going under. It kept many of us informed about the industry. Now we have one less source to draw from. Same with Poytner...at least we had a group of people who are interested in pushing our industry forward.
LOL, you mean kept us misinformed. That is why it is such a shock. They spent so much time making excuses for shoddy, unethical journalism and patting you on the ass telling you what wonderful people you are, you had no clue you were anything but.
Even with customers yelling and advertisers fleeing you closed your eyes and fell back on group think and ideology to comfort you like a fat lady and a box of chocolates.
Now it is all crumbling before your eyes but you will not see, even now.
It's time to move on and see just how fast you can ruin the next industry who's ranks you infect.
Anon 12:42 Bingo, another Winner!!!
I am plagiarizing, but I do love this quote.
“I wonder what these soon to be unemployed folks with those valuable journalism and English degrees are going to do to radicalize the fast food industry.”
It's time to move on and see just how fast you can ruin the next industry who's ranks you infect.
Oh, no! Don't let them screw up the Big Mac.
12:42: That was a little harsh. Poytner is much more rah-rah, contests, seminars and liberal BS than E&P. I thought E&P played it pretty straight, unlike Poytner which is a piece of fecal matter. At least E&P provided a gauge of where papers stood online and circ figures. Where are we going to get that now? Maybe papers don't want that information released. It is awful damning for advertising and staff morale.

"At least E&P provided a gauge of where papers stood online and circ figures."
I agree, except for themselves and until today.
I'll miss Editor and Publisher. They were the only half-way credible source of newspaper news. Romenesko is partisan garbage.
The editor was a shameless and dishonest dirty socialist what politicized the publication far far beyond the scope of its mission.
At least E&P provided a gauge of where papers stood online and circ figures.
They never gave a true account. Just the cooked numbers that they were given. I watched for years the circulation numbers that were reported and compared it to the actual production at several different publications. Never once did what they published come even close to the actual output.
As far as playing it straight. I guess it is a relative term. Once in a great while they might report something on the level but after reading them for so long you realize, they only did that when they pushed the ridiculous envelope so far that they were on the verge of irrelevant.
You are right though, Poytner is just disgusting and useless all the way around.
Poytner: Where all fringe lefty executive editors go after they get the boot.
