16 at McClatchy Interactive (bumped)

News & Observer:
McClatchy Interactive cut 16 workers, or about 11 percent of its staff, on Wednesday as the Internet division of The News & Observer's parent trims costs.

Ten of the employees affected by the move worked in an online newsroom that was a holdover from Nando Times, a pioneer in online news dissemination, said Christian A. Hendricks, president of the Raleigh division.

The other six wrote code, did business development and performed other functions, he said.

McClatchy Interactive is owned by The McClatchy Co., which is based in Sacramento, Calif., and provides online services for the publisher's newspapers. It hosts their Web sites, for instance, and chooses vendors for new features.

Paring the division appears to contrast with McClatchy's effort to boost its online business. But Hendricks said the decision was driven by competition and business realities.

The McClatchy Interactive newsroom filtered and repackaged national and international wire stories for McClatchy's newspaper Web sites. Employees also generated original work, such as interactive features, and coordinated coverage among the newspapers for special events.

An emailer says the cuts "include everyone in the MI newsroom, including a longtime designer who was just "moved" there this morning!"

Great, now we have 2 people who are VPs of departments that consist of just themselves.

Why do we need a VP of HR!? Kiana has to be happy with her decision!

Bitter much? Try not to celebrate too hard while others are losing their jobs, wouldn't want you dying of priapism or anything. Incidentally, here's a themesong for you:

Keep up the good work and have a nice day.

Everyone in the MI newsroom didn't get the ax. The manager of the group (Gina) will remain as part of the McClatchy DC bureau. It's unfortunate since her failure to keep the newsroom vital cost the rest of the people their job.

Who was the designer? Who has left? Which VPs are VP of themselves?

@ananymous2:01 - it's a little presumptuous to assume I wasn't one of the ones laid off don't you think? Sure I'm a little bitter that we are creating new VPs (for no conceivable reason) at higher salaries when people are getting let go. Are you one of those VPs maybe? Why are you so defensive?

The priapism reference and the kill yourself video - nice touch of class from someone who is apparently still there!!

No Kiana doesnt work there anymore but she misses the people and feels sympathy for whats going on there. All of you should as there is NO safe place. Not in this economy or in this changing industry. Keep your heads up MI!!

Howard Weaver in his upbeat cheer-leading blog post states that McClatchy's future relies on strong investment of new technologies.

I guess that means paying an out-source company for it's talented technologists.

So much for McClatchy's commitment to online...the Sacramento Bee also pulled the plug on their nightlife site Saclights.com.
