What's going on with McClatchy Interactive?

A commenter asked about developments with McClatchy Interactive. If you have any news, post it in comments or email me.

McClatchy Interactive sent a newsroom staffer to Beijing to cover the games -- probably not an inexpensive venture, considering McClatchy's financial woes. Checks during and after the games of Fresno Bee, Sac Bee and N&O to check out the "original" content revealed no work done (none that can easily be found, anyway).

What has changed at MI? Nothing.

I can tell you what is happening at McClatchy Interactive... There has been a steady stream of people leaving for better opportunities and their positions are not being filled.

The "new" CMS is dead in the water and hard decisions are now being avoided,

I wonder how many MI staffers would take buyouts if offered them.

That's assuming buyouts are even necessary at MI. So many staffers are voluntarily leaving, they may not need to make the offers.

What's going on with MI? Still wasting money on third-party vendor solutions instead of working in-house or free alternatives; people leaving some departments on a weekly basis because of the instability while other departments continue to hire in and not produce anything; open discussions at cubicles about "mass exodus"; a general apathetic concern from most of it's employees; the list can go on...

don't forget their transcontinental shipment of old nasty cheap refrigerators ....there's an impressive display of solid leadership and money saving techniques.

LMAO - so true!

The staffer sent to Beijing was an editor, not a writer.

Here is an example of the work he did:

An MI employee was sent to Beijing to edit a Dave Barry column? I'm just crazy enough to think that could have been done in Raleigh.

mcclatchy threw away Nando Times in 2003; imagine if they had any execs with a clue about the internet or even marketing and had used it to gain a presence on the Web

As an ex-employee of MI, I'm both saddened and amused at this thread. It will always be 1998 there.
