The Kansas City Star has lost 18,441 subscribers in the past 6 months

A reader sent in the daily circulation figures for the Kansas City Star. Here are the daily M-F numbers:

Kansas City Star
daily 3/31/09: 234,667
daily 9/30/09: 216,226
total lost in past 6 months: 18,441

The total lost (18,441) would be a decent home game attendance for the Kansas City Royals. But still, it's down 8% over 6 months, less than the national average of 10%.

Tomorrow I'll post numbers for The Wichita Eagle, The News Tribune, The Olympian, the Anchorage Daily News, The Fresno Bee, The Idaho Statesman, and the Star-Tribune.

Previous tally here.

How about the piss rag of Myrtle Beach? Maybe that thing isn't even around any more.

What was their circulation at their peak (and when was their peak)?

In 1997 when Disney sold the Star to Knight Ridder the daily circulation was reported in the documentation and news reports to be a little over 291,000. I believe this would be the last reliable count however a former production manager for the Star/Times informed me that the actual number in the late 80's and early 90's was consistently over 312,000 for several years.

One has to keep in mind that back then there was a full scale mail operation that sent thousands of copies to the 4 corners of the earth.

Also one must remember that the KC Star has the distinction of being one of the most often caught cheats in the reporting of their circulation ever known to journalism.

They've lost around 100,000 circulation and they're still making money? Something is wrong in this country.
