A closer look at McClatchy's Baghdad bureau

Earlier I blogged about McClatchy's Baghdad bureau, commenting on the cryptic announcement that the McClatchy's Baghdad bureau chief would be leaving for one month, with no additional information provided on McClatchy's web site. I mentioned Jay Price and Nancy Youssef have recently been authoring articles from Baghdad.

Since then, I've been taking a closer look at McClatchy's Baghdad reporters. Turns out Jay Price is the author of the infamous McClatchy article which reported Baghdad's electricity was much better under Saddam Hussein.

Further research shows Jay Price is a verteran reporter. He has been with The News and Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has been to Iraq and Afganistan several times, including stints where he was embedded with the military. Earlier this year he was interviewed by Harvard Political Review and told a reporter he had heard reports that drunken Blackwater employees had killed Iraqi policemen.

Looking at articles written by Jay Price, it is shocking to see how many articles he has written on Blackwater. Google "Jay Price Blackwater" and you will be amazed at the sheer number of articles he has written on Blackwater. (Google search is here.) OK, he's from the same state as Blackwater, maybe that gives him a special perspective.

But do other groups from North Carolina get the same attention from Jay Price and McClatchy?
