Kansas City Star announces voluntary program for employees to leave***SCROLL FOR UPDATE****

If the newspaper's cost problems continue, the downsizing might become involuntary. Tully added, "This does not preclude the possibility of future severance programs as The Star continues to look for operating efficiencies.”

Kansas City Star employees with at least 20 years of uninterrupted service can elect to leave the company with 20 weeks’ pay under a program announced Tuesday. The voluntary program will be limited to fewer than 4 percent of The Star’s nearly 1,400 employees and will not have a minimum job-reduction target, according to the newspaper’s publisher, Mac Tully.
