Jury reaches verdict in the trial of indicted Dem delegate Sharpe James

AP:

A federal jury has reached a verdict in the corruption trial of former Newark, N.J. mayor Sharpe James.

Jurors sent a note indicating they had reached a decision Wednesday morning. It was the sixth day of deliberations.

Prosecutors charge that James abused his office by steering discounted city land to a one-time mistress, Tamika Riley, who is also on trial.

James' lawyer maintains that no evidence links the former mayor to land deals that prosecutors say made big profits for Riley.

Riley's lawyer told jurors that she got no special treatment because of her relationship with the mayor and that her real estate lawyers failed her.

****UPDATE: Convicted on five counts
