This seems like a positive development in the mainstream media: a reporter at News & Observer is a believer in diversity of ideas

Usually when somebody from the media talks about diversity, they mean ethnic diversity. But Ryan Teague Beckwith, who reports and blogs at McClatchy's News & Observer, says diversity of ideas is a good thing, too.

Here is a part of an interview TalkPolitics did with Ryan Teague Beckwith:

Q. Can a person be a) a blogger, b) a partisan and also c) a journalist?

A. “I have no problem with partisan journalists as long as they cite their sources and play by the rules. A lot of good journalism comes out of newspapers, magazines and blogs that strongly present a point of view. I’m not sure it does much good to go around saying who is and isn’t a journalist. That said, I strongly believe in nonpartisan journalism and strive to be objective in my reporting. I think that we’re all part of a journalistic ecosystem, and like any other environment, diversity is a strength.”

One reason people don't like the mainstream media is most reporters are left-leaning but pretend to be objective. Newspapers would have more appeal if reporters were transparent about their views - and if there were more conservative reporters and columnists.
