I eat crow

I eat crow today for my post this morning about David Westphal making political contributions while employed at McClatchy; he didn't do so, and the error was my own. (I was reviewing political donations on this site and confused the David Westphal in ME with the David Westpahl in MD.) No excuses.

Thanks to Howard Weaver for first bringing it to my attention this morning. You can see the original post -- including corrections -- here.

I also emailed David Westphal today to apologize.

Wow. Accurate journalism is harder than it looks, isn't it?

Yes accurate hard hitting informative journalism is very difficult. Now get out there and find out if Sarah Palin is using toenail polish made by non-union labor.

...Totally accurate anything isn't possible. I've read the newspapers for years and have yet to see an " I-screwed-up " statement like the one above. They try to bury it, or grease it up it and slide it by. The screw-ups that I've brought to the Bee's attention have either been met with silence or dissembling.

...That's why the net earns more respect than the Bee. Ol StopTheBee knows he's not perfect and the only way to keep readers is to fess up and fix it. Tooo bad the Bee is so ignorant and arrogant about errors.

Isn't that a raven, and not a crow on your plate?

Generally, a reporter would call a person about whom he was going to publish derogatory information so as to get the other side of the story. This is not only fair, but it gives the reporter a chance to catch his own mistakes before embarrassing himself in public.

As for newspapers and errors, they publish corrections every day.
