Happy New Year!

I never really understood the "Auld Land Syne" expression, so I'll just say it this way, "Happy New Year!"

Stay safe out there, everybody, and come back tomorrow. This coming year will be a momentous one for McClatchy, and I'll be here to bring you all the latest McClatchy developments. I expect 2009 will see several McClatchy newspapers closed. I look for more layoffs, and deepening financial problems. (I almost used the B-word there but pulled back at the last second.) We may see MNI kicked off the NY stock exchange in just a few weeks. Will 2009 be the year the board of directors mans up and brings in a new team? Gary Pruitt and his team of all-stars (Howard Weaver, John Walcott, Leila Fadel, Margaret Talev, Warren Strobel, Mark Zieman, Rhonda Lokeman, etc.) will give me plenty of interesting material in 2009. So be safe, and I'll see you soon.

I thought I'd just take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year. I am so glad to have found your blog in 2008. I check it out every day.

Auld Lang Syne is a beautiful poem, by Robert Burns, that I have come to appreciate more each year. It is about toasting the year past and the friends of our youth (our oldest and best pals -- now called BFF, I think).

A translation:
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old times since ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
And surely I’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS
We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine(dinner) ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS
And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

There is a nice nostalgic version of this song by Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis that you can hear here or find here.

Sorry to stray off topic. But I think Auld Lang Syne is as relevant as ever. We will be needing our friends and like-minded travelers on this swirling blue orb in 2009.

Happy New Year!

Hopefully the NYT will lose the $27 million lawsuit in 2009.

...To you and yours, Mr. Gregory, may a fine and prosperous 2009 roll out ahead of you. You've made a lie out of the plaintive journalistic hubris : " You'll miss us when we are gone ". No we won't, because we have REAL journalists who publish blogs such as yours. Awash with fresh news to be tested by readers and posters who separate fact from foolishness.
..Thanks for herding the cats. You emailed me a question about a year ago as to whether I thought a comments section would be helpful. I didn't think so, but you were right, it is. Your 'comments' have elicted more info (and degenerated less) than any blog I visit. Just how you keep it on track is a mystery, but you do.
...When the Bee is dead and that stink wafts away, your blog will be remembered as the light in that dark night. Thankyou. Dave D.
