Report: News & Observer among employers with largest layoffs in Raleigh in recent months

McClatchy's News & Observer is making news in North Carolina.

Nationwide, jobless claims are the highest they've been in 26 years. Here at home, the picture is not good.

A new list of layoffs out Thursday shows that in just Wake and Durham Counties, 300 have lost their jobs - or will soon - in just the last two months.

Among the biggest is the News and Observer, which cut 75 people. IBM let 38 go, Optimal Technology cut 35, and Esteves Concrete has laid off 34.

McClatchy got it's wish. One of the last bills that the Senate passed last night was to let them delay funding pension plans.
