The joint operating agreements that were meant to save dying publications in two-newspaper cities like Denver are themselves dying off.
JOAs were supposed to give struggling newspapers a shot at survival by letting them share business operations and costs with their in-town rivals while keeping separate, competing newsrooms. There have been more than two dozen JOAs. http://tinyurl.com/c7kghk

Rick Edmonds: Nobody exactly. If you must have a perp, how about Congress, which authorized Joint Operating Agreements under the Newspaper Preservation Act of 1970? This has proven to be a siren song, and as time goes on nearly all the weaker papers in JOA's have crashed against the cliffs as the Rocky just did.
Call the Circ Dept and ask how shared delivery system is going! Then as contractors about their extra pay ad perks. Then ask customers how they like the new delivery schedule!!!
The Star Telegram is trying to put their DFW.com in print weekly? This is just crazy? How can we think this will work while Go was only 28 pages today. Not sure it makes sense to go after the FW Weekly now. Anyone have any idea why/how this is happening during all of this?
They're trying to copy the NY Times and WSJ entertainment mags that have proven to be highly profitable while everything else crumbles. It is happening in a bunch of cities. In the end, there will be only one. (Where have I heard that before?)
The reason for the new pub is because the current director of that product is one of Wortel's boys from the East coast so he had to come up with an idea since all Wortel knows how to do is cut cut and cut.
The Frederick News-Post will suspend printing its Monday edition starting in April, a measure the media company’s owning family said underscores a commitment to saving jobs and subscriber’s budgets.
The Frederick News-Post is the only continuously family-owned independent daily newspaper in Maryland.
