McClatchy newspaper in South Carolina to outsource printing operations

McClatchy's Sun News in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina will outsource printing beginning in April, according to an email sent to employees by publisher P.J. Browning.

Subject: Printing and Packaging Outsourcing Announcement

All - we will be running an article in tomorrow's newspaper and posting online information regarding outsourcing of printing and packaging. Just to give you a few details:

Last night and today we held employee meetings for all of our printing and packaging employees. We shared with this group that we have signed a letter of intent to outsource the printing and packaging of The Sun News in April.

While this move makes sense from a financial and a long term capital avoidance perspective, it still impacts employees who have done a wonderful job day in and day out in producing our paper. When we looked at outsourcing we had several things to consider. Our press is 23 years old and a part of the thinking was capital avoidance through upgrades to the press. In addition, in our search for a printer, we wanted to find someone that would provide the same or better quality product and last but not least, the ability to have deadline flexibility so we can deliver on our circulation deadlines to our readers.

We feel confident that we will be able to meet these goals and will be forthcoming as more information is available.

Sincerely,

P.J. Browning

Why all this outsourcing news just before the 4Q report? Are they trying to impress financial people? Why not let things shake out after the report? I don’t like the looks of this.

McClatchy holds a little staff meeting. We are outsourcing your jobs. Thanks for your years of service. Goodbye.

Outsourcing, Yeah right-

McClatchy:
We hate to turn you out into this terrible job market, but aren’t we all suffering?

and so it begins.

There seems to be a pattern here.

The smaller papers in terms of circ are reporting first, the bigger papers are waiting to report last. It will be interesting to see what news Sac Bee, Ft Worth, and Kansas City will announce later this week.

Kansas City already losing some finance jobs later this month due to their outsourcing with India (mentioned last fall). Would not be suprised to see them add more.

It will be interesting how the publisher there spin this after the news about DUI charges on his wife were reported.

This is looking a lot like what happened in Olympia. McClatchy stopped printing The Olympian on-site, and moved production to its Tacoma operation.

This company seems to like the idea of cutting everything they can from their thriving small-town papers so they can try to bail out their doomed big city markets.

This is happening in Rock Hill, too. They'll begin printing in Charlotte in March. Not sure the numbers who will be without jobs.

But where will the Sun-News print?

“We shared” - Somehow that wording put me on edge. It was like saying, we know you have been worried about your jobs, so we are going to take that little worry right off your minds. We will give your worries to other people. Now, they can worry instead of you being bothered, isn’t that better? Sheesh!
