A comparison of McClatchy's offers to Sacramento, Fresno, and Modesto

Via email:

Three Bee Cut Comparisons:

SACRAMENTO: 165 guild-covered full-time newsroom employees
26 layoffs = 15.7 percent staff reduction
37 layoffs = 22 percent staff reduction

FRESNO: 89 guild-covered full-time newsroom employees
16 layoffs = 18 percent staff reduction
21 layoffs = 23.6 percent staff reduction

MODESTO: 50 guild-covered full-time newsroom employees
11 layoffs = 22 percent staff reduction
21 layoffs = 42 percent staff reduction

Sacramento votes Friday, Modesto votes Monday and Fresno votes Tuesday.

I think there are other differences in terms of furloughs, vacation accruals. If you have more info, leave it in comments.

California needs a big enema, after all the years of blue-rule, they need the normal
states to come in and save them. They won’t learn a thing.

“The Golden State -- which a decade ago was the booming technology capital of the world -- has been done in by two decades of chronic overspending, overregulating and a hyperprogressive tax code …”

-- California’s state expenditures grew from $104 billion in 2003 to $145 billion in 2008.
-- California has the worst credit rating in the nation.
-- California has the fourth highest unemployment rate in the nation, 9.3 percent -- higher even than the car manufacturing state of Michigan.
-- California has the second highest home foreclosure rate.
-- California’s tax-paying middle class is leaving the state. California’s net loss last year in state-to-state migration exceeded every other state's. New York, another left-run state, was second.
-- Since 2000, California’s job growth rate -- which in the late 1970s was many times higher than the national average -- has lagged behind the national average by almost 20 percent.
-- California has lost 25 percent of its industrial work force since 2001. . . .

The left is bringing the greatest state to its knees.

What did Modesto do to deserve this?

A 42 percent newsroom staff cut is threatened.

Seriously?

Might as well just close up shop completely. Why not? The building already is mostly empty and up for sale.

After more than a century milking the cash cow in Modesto, has this Bee become McClatchy's sacrificial lamb?

McClatchy loves to claim it practices civic service journalism. Well after financially raping Modesto for decades, now it's turning its back on that city, its residents and employees during the most dire financial crisis in the Central Valley's history.

Doesn't Lynn Dickerson still live in Modesto. Perhaps a visit to her home is in order.

Wind down – Friday, March 6

Come wind down with coworkers and guild collogues at 2766 Freeport Blvd. The party starts at 6 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 pays for the food and beer, and will support the McClatchy defense fund, which can help needy Bee Guild members get through the rocky times ahead.

Here's your chance to help. Hey, they were there for you. Come on, now!

The numbers are pretty large in all camps. Morale must simply suck as the cancer spreads

Let's the conversation to what could replace McClatchy in the cities where they've held court. Independent online news sites? Lots of them? Maybe the mainstream journalists will take over the alternative weeklies and post daily news on their Web sites.

Modesto's wage cuts are greater than Sacramento and Fresno. The guild will cave to save a few jobs, only to have them disappear later.

Left? Isn't the Governator Right?
