Sacramento Bee loses 20,000 subscribers in the past year

The Sacramento Bee’s average weekday circulation fell 7.4 percent in the six months ending March 31, to 248,855.

That drop is in line with the industry average of 7.1 percent -- but the numbers are huge.

Here is the breakdown over the past one year:

  • daily circulation as of 3/31/08: 268,755
  • daily circulation as of 3/31/09: 248,855
That is a loss of 20,000 subscribers over the past 12 months. How long can the Bee sustain itself with a trajectory like that?

do you have the numbers from Raleigh?

Did The Bee adjust the rate card accordingly?

One can only ponder how the ad sales managers danced around the obligatory rate increase.

I do love it so!

I wonder how much the base circulation area population increased during this time. Last time I drove through Sacramento it seemed to me that there were endless new housing developments and apartment complexes.

A more meaningful number would be how many subscribers there are per 1,000 possible subscribers.

it's over for the Bee, only the dino-era executives believe it has a future

Well the nice thing about %'s is that they go down relative to each other.

So they lost 20k in one year (during one of the hardest economic environments in generations).

If they maintain the 7.4% then hey...they only lose 18,500 this year. That means they didn't lose as many as last year (a savings of 1,500).

What will really make this newsworthy is if we have recovered and they still lost that a year. Then you know there is a real problem.

Frankly I am kind of surprised it wasn't more since they are in one of the hotbeds of economic failure.

Melanie Sill has done nothing but hurt the Sacbee. She'll be there until the bitter end. She is a leech, not a journalist, IMO.

Cut the Bee some slack. Changes are coming and you will see massive growth in circulation. They are going really hard news with articles like this: "What's your car's name". A 4 inch column in today's issue is seeking stories about naming your car. I am not making this up but here quoted is part of the column "Send your story about your car's nickname to livinghere@sacbee.com along with your name, phone number and a photo for use in an upcoming story." I feel something running down my leg waiting for these stories.

My car is named "CANCEL THE BEE BASTARD". Sending story at once.

Ah, as Melanie would say, "Iceberg ahead, full speed ahead", or " Damn the conservative readers, full speed ahead." From a former conservative subscriber, good -bye Bee.

..I call my ride " McClatchy " and it's right outsi.....HEY! , What are you doing with my car ?

...It just got reposessed ! " McClatchy " is no more. Oh well, it was barely running anyway, and way behind in the payments. It's no great loss that it's gone.

I haven't seen any comments in regard to the Bee's heralded new improved TV listing insert. Smaller but grander or some dribble...and oh you have to call and subscribe, for an additional 25 cents a week. or else don't be looking for it in your sunday edition. Not that anyone looks at the waste of paper insert, but for those few subcribers left, shall we all deduct the 25cents perweek from our monthly bill? once again paper gets cut, but no reduction in rates. and this one is a bit "sneaky" the way they are going about it....

Well said Dave D.

My car is named Sacramento Bee too. It has 4 left tires and no engine.
