Advertising continues to do well in certain markets while bad whiney ex-journalists continue to blame the current administration for all their problems.

No surprise there at all.

Thanks for the link Walter. Interesting article that I know I will never read in my local paper.

Short Covering Continues:

Latest short interest released.

As of 5/15 - 7,052,943 with 7.5 days to cover. That is a difference of 2 million shares covered for the two week period.

One or two more rounds of covering and traders will be in total control of this stock. Not a good thing.

The Sun News in Myrtle Beach is going to start charging extra for a new and bigger TV tab, starting in July. I pity the poor people who have to keep track of who gets the tab and who doesn't. What a logistics nightmare, especially with a drastically reduced staff and the printing/inserting now taking place in Charleston.

Anon 7:26, how about the poor people who have to keep track of TV book deliveries in a major market like Miami?

For Fort Worth Star-Telegram ex-employees and others in North Texas:

Are you up Freelance Creek without a paddle? Come to SPJ’s free seminar on Saturday, June 6, at the University of Texas at Arlington and you should leave with, if not a paddle, at least some ideas on how to navigate chores like finding clients, negotiating with them, creating your own website, and dealing with taxes and 401Ks.

We’ll have panels on getting out in the market, dealing with the business side and visual and multimedia freelancing. The seminar is open only to media professionals; there is no fee.

Panelists will include:
Carol Zuber-Mallison, who, after stints at both the /Morning News/ and /Star-Telegram/, has had a successful freelance graphics business for 17 years;
Photographer Manuel Pecina of the American Society of Media Photographers
Paul Foutch, former stock market editor and business reporter of /The Dallas Morning News/, now with Edward Jones Investments;
Catherine Team, creator of NeedMedia.com, and an advertising and marketing pro for the past 30 years;
Meda Kessler, editorial director of /360 West/ magazine.

The seminar will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with most of the action in Room 258, Fine Arts Building (Central Section). The Fine Arts Building is on the west side of Cooper Street at Greek Row Drive. Parking is available in faculty lots on the north side of the building and across Nedderman Drive to the west. Once you park, there should be signs directing you to the room.

Directions to UTA from I-30 are available at: http://www.uta.edu/maps/directions-i30

And here’s a map: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=700+Greek+Row+Dr.+Arlington,+Texas&hl=en

Please RSVP to Gayle at gayle.reaves@fwweekly.com so we know how many donuts to buy. Also message Gayle with any questions or requests.

Sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists-Fort Worth Pro chapter, with assistance from the University of Texas at Arlington and friends in the media.

The stock is under $1 again, what happened?

Who ever was covering their short position was done. There is nothing to hold the price up because no one is buying the stock, so, it incrementally goes down as sells start to dominate.

A few days from now when the prices sink sufficiently, the remainders will start to cover until almost all the shorts are out.

After that, the march to zero without some very good news. Remember, fair value of MNI is zero, so that news needs to be an earth moving event.

The Newspaper Association of America's latest monthly statistical report shows that in April, newsprint consumption fell almost 28% to 350,000 metric tons year-over-year. Over a seven year period, newsprint consumption plunged 50% from April 2003, when the industry consumed roughly 710,000 metric tons of newsprint.
