reader: Sacramento Bee laying off distribution staff, will outsource delivery -- updated: it's starting in Kansas City

It's not just Modesto -- a reader says the Sacramento Bee is also outsourcing delivery:

As of today, June 1st. most if not all Circulation/Distribution staff at the Sac Bee have been laid off. Sacrificing service for savings is worth it for MNI. All MNI Circulation Depts. will will follow...

UPDATE: There's a lot of that going around -- looks like Kansas City is preparing to outsource home delivery.

Next up: the Carolinas?

Kansas City just consolidated their distribution centers to include only one in Kansas and Missouri in preparation of outsourcing their Circulation home delivery. This would two "middle managers" including either a Circulation Director, Metro Home Delivery Manager or Country Home Delivery Manager. Two of these position are gone including all Metro Zone Managers and District Managers. Some of them will be incorporated into this new outsourced system. The unfortunate thing is that managers making these decision now will be part of the separation and they don't even know it.

I am a carrier for the KC Star and would love to hear more about this. I am a country carrier so I dont get to hear what is going on downtown. Of course no one tells us anything untill the last minute, afraid we will all drop our routes on them. Cant trust anyone to tell you the truth from the Star. Oh well, with gas prices going up again, we dont make much anymore anyway. I think we are all just scared of change since a lot of us have been doing this for 10 to 20 years. And with the Star making us insert adv. now that they are suppose to pay us for, but dont, we get screwed all ways. Every night when I get up, I wonder if there will be any papers to deliver.

Management called an employees only meeting Monday for Circulation Distribution employees only. If it is your day off, you must attend. Word on the street from another carrier is that layoff are in store for DMs and ZMs. The source, even though a carrier, just like the rest of us, is well sourced from Downtown. The Country Home Delivery Manager can't keep his mouth shut. Keep it coming Mitch....
The next bit of information is that our pay will be looked at. Gas is going up and I can't keep doing this anymore with lower fees..
