This blog is mainly about the spectacular train wreck at The Sacramento Bee and its parent company, the McClatchy Company. But I also post about current events, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, politics, anything else that grabs my attention. Take a look around this blog, hope you enjoy it.

Columbus Ledger-Enquirer tries incentive program for ad reps
A McClatchy paper in Georgia is trying an incentive program for ad reps -- but the program has other employees wondering why they don't get a reward for doing their jobs.
The Columbus Ledger is giving away 42" flat screen tv's and Wii gaming systems to Advertising Sales Reps for selling contracts. When do the rest of us get our TVs and Wii's for doing our jobs?

Next step is going door to door and signing you up, whether you like it or not.
Incentives have long been commonplace in sales departments in virtually every industry. Sales employees are offered cash bonuses, free trips, cars, etc. when they exceed targets. There's nothing nefarious about it - its a very longstanding practice.
The reason for it, of course, is obvious - the sales force is where the revenue comes from. I'm astonished that the CLE (or McClatchy in general) hasn't been using them in the past.
Agree with 2:46 p.m. If the newsroom doesn't like this, tell them they'll get a bonus for reaching a certain level for number of stories produced or number of papers sold or number of page views on the web site and see how they like it.
I always love when it when sales people like 4:43 talks about tanigbles sales forces use. Newsrooms produce the tangible copy that drive page views on the web and print in the first place. Try a newspaper .com with just ads and se how much revenue it generates. What a joke! I wouldn't work harder to win some POS TV MCC gets for free!
Selling ads for failing newspapers can't be all that easy. There will be no jobs for the other newspaper employees unless these ad reps succeed. I would think a TV perk a small reward for keeping a business afloat.
Sales is important but it is the blue collar guys that are doing the heavy lifting for the company that make the whole thing work. Over worked, under paid and treated with zero respect.
McClatchy laid me off so I don't have anything better to do than run down Pruitt and the wrecking crew. The rest is collateral damage! I'd like to see a Plasma TV put groceries on the table...I guess you could Pawn it!
That paper is nothing but ads already. What's so funny is that no one buys that paper because its worthless unless you have a cat, so the ads are a waste of $$ too.

2:34 Hey, you're onto something. McClatchy, ACORN. I think you hit the nail on the head. A match made in hell
I told you I'm getting my raise in August, I told you!

Nice guess 4:58 but 4:43 doesn't come from advertising. That's typical newsroom arrogance though. Newsrooms still don't get it.

So you have production, news desk and ad sales...kinda like the legs, brain and asshole saying they are the most important part of the body!
Looks like a lot of newspaper employees need to get back to work!
