The Wichita Eagle is looking for a web producer

Who says McClatchy isn't hiring?! The Wichita Eagle is looking for a web producer.

The Web producer is responsible for day-to-day content operations for Kansas.com and affiliated Web sites of The Wichita Eagle. The producer works to package, post, edit and manage content, collaborating across multiple departments of the newsroom and company. This position requires an excellent team player who works constructively with others and can handle multiple responsibilities at once in a fast-paced environment.

You will be working with a highly experienced news team that is energized about the opportunities in a Web-focused newsroom. Our team has driven year-after-year online audience growth by learning new skills and focusing on transforming our culture into a Web-first news operation.

The producer will work with our six-person team to originate content improvements, move news to the site with urgency, identify new opportunities and strategies, and execute longer-term projects consistently. Strong news judgment is a must, as well as writing and editing skills and a deep understanding of the needs and habits of the online news audience. This person is responsible for keeping news fresh on our Web site while also maintaining our company’s standards for quality and accuracy.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, with two to five years’ experience as a digital editor or producer and three to five years’ experience in news reporting or editing. Candidates should have basic producer skills such as HTML and CSS, as well as experience using metrics tools such as Omniture or Google Analytics. Send cover letter, resume and work samples to: Sherry Chisenhall, editor, at schisenhall@wichitaeagle.com or The Wichita Eagle, P.O. Box 620, Wichita, KS, 67201.

Wow. Growing like a weed they are.
But what about print? How's the hiring there? Not much? More layoffs?

So then would it be fair to say "The McClatchy grass looks great, but the house is falling apart?

Nice to see someone so quick to once again take a positive, albeit very small, and make it a negative.

It's also looking for a web editor. Word in MNI circles is they were both forced out because they weren't hitting the company's traffic goals.

Isn't it funny that a lot of newspapers seeking online editors list a snail-mail address? Isn't that in itself an indication that the newspaper just doesn't get it?

No, it is an indication that there really isn't a job to be had. Mail us your resume, we'll steal your information and sell it. In the mean time, we'll sit on your application until we're a government entity.

Bloodletting at the Eagle? K-State writer is leaving. He writes for the Scar, too.

The departure of Jeffrey Martin is huge for the Eagle. He's the closest thing the paper has to having a cult following. He covers the only thing the paper has besides high school sports to call its own. His blog was the only thing the paper has online besides its freakish opinion blog worth visiting on a regular basis. Problem is, Martin stopped updating it about a month ago. Sad. But he'll be missed.

10:43 a.m. I don't think they were forced out for not hitting traffic goals. The Eagle's traffic has gone through the roof this year because of a couple of stories that were linked by Yahoo! They may be gone for not reaching revenue goals, but I doubt it had anything to do with traffic goals.
