Charlotte Observer hiring ad sales representative (updated)

Last I heard, nobody was buying newspaper ads, but hey, Charlotte hasn't stopped trying to sell ads.

The Charlotte Observer, the region’s leading information source, has a Full time opportunity for a sales-focused professional to join our team as a Advertising Sales Representative- Lake Norman Magazine. The Charlotte Observer is one of the largest newspaper in the Southeast area with circulation at 209,218 daily and 258,722 Sunday. The Charlotte Observer employs approximately 750 employees and is owned by McClatchy.

The Sales Representative is responsible for achieving and increasing advertising sales revenue with new accounts. Sales Representatives must establish, develop and maintain a professional relationship with advertisers in the assigned area and maintain contact with key decision makers with companies doing business with the newspaper. This position requires a thorough understanding of the market and products sold in order to create professional and effective proposals. Representatives must also create and produce advertising layouts, online proposals, preprint analysis and specs that are both attractive and results oriented.

Interested candidates must be highly motivated to sell, be a self-starter and possess excellent communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint a must. Candidates must also have access to reliable transportation to make sales calls to clients of The Charlotte Observer.

Update: a revolving door of sales reps at the Observer?

When you are selling a crappy product and no one is buying, you go through a lot of sales reps quickly.

You are correct and for $80K a year I am sure that no one will be interested. Please just stfu and speak only about information that you know something about.

Give yourself a raise there did you Mr. 2K Commission Tycoon? That's right you dipshit, we know who you are.

80K my ass.

Please don't speak of things you know nothing about your dummy.

Sales rep salary: $45K
Hit goal every month: $2,000 (and yes, we're hitting our goal every month)
Quarterly goal: $2K 4x per year.

$77K. You're right I was lying. Sorry.

Don't speak unless you're in the trenches like we are.

Churn em and burn em.

I am sure they can find people to take the job. But The Observer will be looking again soon because Mr. New Sales Rep will miss his quota miserably.

Ad sales are falling like a stone. Did you notice the layoff at the Observer. Perhaps that was because all of the ad sales reps were blowing their quotas away.

Then the McClatchy fan boys can brag about the new posting as a "positive" sign for the paper. Right.

I would be more careful about telling people what they know or don't.

Good god, what a loser.

Jealousy is a bitch isn't it. Doesn't it even make you more mad knowing how much less you were paid AND got let go. Thanks to the dead weight we let go, things are looking up.

Keep up the whining girls; you'll get it right back as we continue to grow without you.

LOL Growth.

12 months -50%
2 years -90.92
5 years -96.99

Someone is demanding that we not speak. Just like Obama and the libs to attack the right of speech and disagreement itself.
In this case the poster just seems like an arrogant child who is not quite up to the task.
Everyone knows the facts:
The quality of the Observer is in decline. Morale is low; staff has been slashed.
Ad revenue is in free fall. Not only is the economy on the skids, newspapers are dying as an industry. Hence the layoffs.
Now this brat-poster doesn't want anyone to say these terrible things. Not only are these facts true in Charlotte but they are true in Raliegh too. Worse.
In this environment, hiring sales reps is going to be tougher and tougher. Look for commissions rate to go up and turn over along with it.

If the sales reps are going to produce "professional and effective" presentations, perhaps they should be working ON the paper instead of selling ads.

STFU is the Obama health care debate strategy. The politicians can't defend this policy so they are focused on limiting the debate by preventing the other side from speaking.
Not surprising that a MNI supporter would use the same strategy.

Anyone really believe that selling ads for the Charlotte Observer is a plum job that leads to high income and long tenure?

Anonymous said...

Hitting goal every month and laying off your staff because ad revenue is down?
Right.

I bet in the next crop of sales reps they bring in the base goes down and commission goes up.
MNI apologists will call that a raise.

I get it! The reason ad revenue is down is that management just didn't hire enough sales reps. All of the ones they had were beating quota, getting monthly bonuses rolling in the money. If only they had hired enough reps then layoffs wouldn't have been needed.
What a shame!

Advertisers in Charlotte got wise and stopped buying McClatchy ads.

Notice how some posters here discuss the issue and some posters just tell everyone to shut up.
