Still looking for signs of life at the Bee Guild

Is the Sacramento Bee Guild alive?

Last Thursday this little item was posted at the Sacramento Bee Guild site:

"This just in Fresno voted “no” on the vacation burndown. We’ll give more details when we have them."

That was almost a week ago. The Guild hasn't posted any updates on Fresno since then.

(It's not like the info isn't out there: I posted an update on this blog: Fresno Bee to Guild: get ready for unpaid furoughs.)

On Friday the Guild did post a job opening -- "communications advocate" -- outside the industry.

Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

They are all having tea with Cindy Sheehan. That's why you don't hear anything from or about them.

Newspaper Industry Ad Revenue at 1965 Levels (Columbia Journalism Review) AT THIS RATE SOON THERE WILL BE NO SINGS OF LIFE AT THE GUILD

Inflation-adjusted numbers show papers are even worse off than you think

Martin Peers had a smart Heard on the Street in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal on the critical question of how much of the recent plunge in media companies’ fortunes has been a cyclical decline versus a secular one.

It’s obviously some of both, but the mix will decide what the next five years look like for magazines and newspapers, the critical providers of original reporting in the country. Alas, I’ve crunched some numbers on the industry and they’re beyond ugly.

First, some definitions. A cyclical decline is one due to the inevitable ups and downs of the broad economy. Most businesses get hurt in the recession part of a cycle but do well in the expansionary part and their fortunes more or less move up or down with the economy at large.

They talk to each other at the office. They don't need to post public comments for their enemies to pick up on anti-journalist blogs.

The Fresno Bee's representation by the guild is a joke and has been for years. The labor rep is a joke. They should put her face on a milk carton. The further south you go from Sac, the less she cares. Strike that. She only cares about Sac.

Since there are only eight of them in good standing, they can make policy and dispurse information over at the office vending machines. They're as useless as udders on a steer.

Don't it make you all happy inside to know the guild libs come here to read and comment?

Only 8 members in good standing in Fresno? I knew the number was obscenely low. Basically the stewards and one other person? There has never been any reason to join the guild. If you don't join you still get the benefits they negotiate, be they pretty small. That's a money saving tip for you. And frankly what has a labor rep done for the Fresno Bee in the last 10 years? The grievances they threaten to file are weak. When they do have something they can actually file on that's solid, they back down, run and hide.
