"I wish I had more furlough days”

Not surprised by this:

Overheard in the newsroom:
Stressed reporter: “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I wish I had more furlough days.”

Having Obama's lackeys write all your
stories sure is hard work.

Indicative of how demoralized newspaper staffs have become. These jobs are now looked at as temporary not life-long careers. Our friends have been laidoff or took buyouts, we are overworked and underpaid and our benefits are a joke. Who wants to put in the effort? Furlough days are days we don't have to face the awful truth and the dark depression of the newsroom.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

The only good thing about a furlough day is that they aren't supposed to call you and you are not supposed to contact them. Not even allowed to check e-mail. Truly, a "complete" day away from work related B.S. Of course, the B.S. is waiting for you when you go back.

Propaganda! This job is a piece of cake. I go to my press releases copy/paste my Media Matters releases and apply my name after changing a few words around. Wash/Rinse/Repeat 5 times per day and presto. I am a Star and all the people love me.

This is why MacCrappy will go bankrupt or always be a mediocre business if it survives. By treating productive employees as a cost instead of an asset it will reap what is has sown. Once the economy and job market improves there will be a mass exodus of talent fed up with pay freezes and cuts, benefit reductions, and short-staffing while being managed by overpaid hacks who are getting rewarded for short-term profit at the expense of the company's long-term health.

I am still trying to figure out what person in their right mind would not prefer a furlough to a pay cut.

One earns you less pay for the same amount of work. One earns you less pay for a corresponding reduction in the number of days you have to be at the office.

It has seemed to me to be no brainer from day one.

I was shocked when the HR folks at The Star, after approving pay cuts and salary freezes, said what they really wanted to avoid was making people take furloughs.

Oh, come now. Where I work we got the best of both worlds: Pay cuts AND furloughs.

Pay cuts and furloughs and higher health premiums and no more 401K match and longer hours and increased stress and...

... and no more pension plan...

How sad. Many of us can remember how excited and enthusiastic we were about starting a new day with McClatchy. It once was a source of pride and we loved our jobs and contributed generously and tirelessly to the product. It's too painful to contemplate how low this company has fallen. A complete tragedy.

If you read the entire story the second to last paragraph reads:

"Yet the report added that Coast Guard officials theorized Beck's mother also could have jumped overboard."

So what's the problem? Geez, these asshole reporters are annoying!
