The Newsroom Department of The News & Observer has an opening for a Copy Editor-Reporter (Cary News/Southwest Wake News). The hours for this position will vary, with occasional night and weekend hours required.
The Copy Editor-Reporter will work collaboratively with the editor, designer and fellow reporters to produce two editions of The Cary News and one of the Southwest Wake News, meeting production deadlines.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and planning skills to balance role as reporter and copy editor for community newspapers. Report, write and take photographs for news and feature articles, using accepted journalistic standards for sourcing, reporting, writing, and fact checking. Apply news judgment to find community journalism angle to national, regional and local issues and avoid duplication of coverage with The N&O. As copy editor, apply knowledge of journalism ethics and standards to copy under review; apply knowledge of AP/N&O style to copy; write headlines and cutlines. Strong computer skills and ability to learn and adapt to new technologies. Expertise with social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.). Post blog entries and news updates to the Internet.
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in journalism or equivalent experience. At least three years of experience at a community or daily newspaper required. Ability to work on deadline, organize projects, multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment. Expertise with editorial production software – CCI experience is a big plus -- and an aptitude for and interest in mastering new applications. Basic photography skills preferred. Must use own vehicle. Must have acceptable 7 year DMV driving record based on company standards. Must have valid NC driver’s license, be at least 21 years old and have $100,000-$300,000 liability coverage on auto insurance policy.
