Newspaper publishers association accuses Joe Wilson of racism, cancels midwinter conference in South Carolina (update -- something fishy?)

Just when you think newspaper publishers can't act any more idiotic, check out the latest bonehead move by the National Newspaper Publishers Association.

The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) is backing out of holding its mid-winter conference in South Carolina after one of its U.S. representatives accused President Barack Obama of lying during the president's congressional address on health care.

"Rep. [Joe] Wilson's remarks were racist, disrespectful and a disingenuous violation -- not only of President Obama -- but to the institution of the presidency and only solidified our position and the importance in not spending Black dollars where Black people are not respected," NNPA Chairman Danny J. Bakewell Sr. said in a statement.

The news of the NNPA boycott of South Carolina was reported by EurWeb. A call placed to the offices of the NNPA was not immediately returned.

News accounts are identifying NNPA as a black organization. Fine, but that hasn't prevented them from dumb decisions.

UPDATE: Something is fishy with this story -- I just checked the web site of the NNPA (here) and there is nothing about a mid-winter conference. No press release about canceling the conference. I have a little experience with conferences like this; they are planned far in advance and most organizations wouldn't cancel a conference just weeks before it was scheduled without some circumstances that required it -- like not enough people were coming. I think there is a lot more to this story than these classically trained journalists with high ethical standards have disclosed yet.

How horrible, a pack of garbage isn't coming to their community. What a loss. Piss on them. That's all anyone needs is a pack of whiners who think every social slight, big or small, is an indication of racism.

John,

Thanks for the that thoughtful and enlightened statement. Your namecalling and sensitivity is an example for us all. Thanks for leading the way, you brave and intelligent man.

Maybe there is hope for South Carolina after all. I remember how the people cheered when the KC Star made up the falsified story that the NAACP might pull their convention if the Mayor didn't fire a little old lady from the park department.

It didn't work out for the Star or the Racist organizations quite like they planned.

What are Black Dollars?

Could we have a revival of the deletion policy for personal attacks such as 7:29 please.

This is the same person over and over again, being allowed to post personal attacks, when by all rights he should be deleted on sight and permanently banned from posting.

Can there be a more out of touch segment of society than newspaper publishers? They're spineless, which shows in the bottomline every quarter. Good riddance. South Carolina doesn't need the pollution.

I'm surprised the budget allows for these hacks to waste money schoomzing on these dated get-togethers. Hope they're paying their own ways and not spending one full-time employee's annual salary on this total waste of time.

7:23 It's Ok for these whiners to try and destroy Wilson's career with a false accusation of racism, but it's not OK for me to call them on it? Up yours. After watching a similar debacle here in Kansas City with La Racist any group that's of that mindset, good riddance to bad rubbish. Why invite a pack of whiny losers into your community. I repeat, piss on them. Let the pack of them go to hell with their sniveling convention.

Here's a thought, if these pigs are willing to trash Wilson based on a trumped up allegation of racism, what kind of "journalism" could these liars be producing. I hope the lot of them go out of business.

HOW IN THE HELL IS JOE WILSON's OUTBURST RACIST??? I can only predict that this effing race card is going to backfire in a huge way for African Americans. Like the boy who cried wolf.

A simple minded decision by simple minded news wonks. Nothing new. And does anyone care if and where or when they meet. Nothing from nothing remains nothing.

Hey 10:31 are you using the word 'boy' to be defamatory? I agree, it is out of control.

Joe Wilson has been found guilty of telling the truth. That something that is not allowed under politically-correct, left-wing fascism.

With Obama we have reached the very bottom. He is a deeply stupid, corrupt, affirmative-action parasite who has nothing but contempt for Whites. Obama is a left-wing fascist who has already defined his domestic opponents as potential terrorists. Like Lenin and Stalin before him he elevates criminals affiliated with the Black Panthers, La Raza, the Communist Party and ACORN to positions of respect and authority.

We are in the hands of an angry, overgrown adolescent who believes his every act of corruption and illegal abuse of power is an act of moral superiority. Obama is a traitor and the logical conclusion of the last 50 years of left-wing policies. When he lies, when he fails, when he destroys this country utterly he will blame us. He doesn’t even have the sense to hide his malignant, hostile intentions.

Fascists are far-right. Communists are far-left. Try to pay a little more attention in class.

No you f(*king idiot they are not. Facists were a form of anti marxist socialists aligned and envious of national socialists. The only scale that they would be right wing on is one that doesn't recognize a right wing at all....LIKE EUROPE you f$%king dope.

Then your idiot ass has the nerve to tell someone to pay attention in class. Which ghetto school did you attend. G Money's Pimp U ?

7:23 AM should be deleted also. He is discussing John, not the subject. He can keep his snide remarks to himself, it adds nothing to the thread, IMO.

7:42, right? What are Black dollars? That sounds racist to me.
Why are there still these black groups anyway? This playing the race card over every little perceived slight is getting old really fast.

I didn't know there were black dollars. That must be ACORN money from the backroom.
You know, hide it from the IRS stuff.

Maybe they planned to select Van Jones as the Black Money fund raiser chairman. A high honor last bestowed on Charlie Rangel. Now that Van Jones has become a black sheep, the NNPA is waiting for the ACORN scandal to subside, so their ACORN journalists can attend the conference.

And better slow down on the drinking. It's too early to be in your state of anger.

We are all racists. End of story. There is no denying it.

That said, can someone please tell me whether this story is true:

1. I found nothing on the NNPA site.
2. I cannot find the press release cited in many of the stories.
3. I find only the same "source" cited repeatedly with no verification.
4. I find it hard to believe NNPA would put out a press release then be unavailable to any news agency trying to verify what's going on.

Very odd. I hope this not a hoax. If it is, it's on a grand scale.

Note:".. 200 Black-owned newspapers is joining the NAACP economic boycott of the state that has been in effect since July 1999..."
--
NNPA Chair Pulls Black Press Convention from South Carolina
Rep. Joe Wilson’s Outburst Reignites Focus on South Carolina

LOS ANGELES (NNPA) - The National Newspaper Publishers Association, the Black Press of America, has announced that it will not hold its mid-winter conference in South Carolina scheduled for January 2010.
The organization of more than 200 Black-owned newspapers is joining the NAACP economic boycott of the state that has been in effect since July 1999 when the South Carolina NAACP called for it as a protest of the Confederate flag – a symbol of racial hatred - atop the State House and inside the House and Senate chambers. The boycott, still in effect, calls on groups and individuals to avoid traveling to the state for business or pleasure and discourages residents from visiting South Carolina beaches or patronizing restaurants and motels.
This announcement comes on the heels of South Carolina Republican Representative Joe Wilson’s outburst of “You lie!” that broke decorum during President Barack Obama’s address to the Joint Houses of Congress on health care reform on Wednesday Sept. 9.
Wilson’s outburst was viewed as ghastly by both Democrats and Republicans who refused to defend him.
[“As African-American newspaper publishers, we stand in solidarity with the NAACP and fully support the economic boycott of South Carolina,”] states NNPA Chairman Danny J. Bakewell Sr. “Rep. Wilson’s remarks were racist, disrespectful, and a disingenuous violation--not only of President Obama--but to the institution of the presidency and only solidified our position and the importance in not spending Black dollars where Black people are not respected. The continued public and blatant disrespect of President Barack Obama by members of Congress will not be rewarded with our dollars nor will a state that continues to uphold America’s shameful past by flying the Confederate flag.”
The NNPA is currently considering North Carolina in lieu of its decision to boycott South Carolina. The group joins a host of other organizations and businesses that refuse to hold conventions or meetings in South Carolina.
Bakewell Sr., elected NNPA chairman in June, is executive publisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper, the largest and most read Black newspaper west of the Mississippi and owner of WBOK radio station in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Bakewell knows well the power of economic boycott. He is CEO of The Bakewell Company, one of the largest African-American owned development companies in the United States. The company is responsible for the development of more than 1 million square feet of retail space in predominantly African-American communities, including Compton and South Central Los Angeles.

Census ad dollars ‘not enough’ black publishers say

By Pharoh Martin
NNPA National Correspondent
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (NNPA)—Rick Wade, deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to the U. S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, was met with a bit of displeasure from black publishers June 26 as they expressed that the government’s [Census advertising plan for black newspapers was insufficient.]
Wade announced to members of the National Newspaper Publishers Association that out of an estimated budget of more than $24 million dollars for black media advertising only $1.6 million will be spent with black newspapers.
The funds are to be used to assure an accurate count in difficult to count communities, such as among African Americans and Latinos.

“That’s not enough,” one publisher said quickly in response to Wade’s announcement. Another publisher did the math and equated that the estimated numbers will do nothing if split among hundreds of newspapers nationally. At the most it will only buy one ad, she said.

Digging for funds: The left-wing 2010 Census advocacy group
'The Census Project'
===
A Failed Campaign: 2010 Census Ad Dollars Are Inadequate For Minorities

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
On April 29, the left-wing 2010 Census advocacy group The Census Project published a piece by Terri Ann Lowenthal (who served on President Obama’s transition team) that discussed the ethnic media’s perception that 2010 Census advertising efforts had gone seriously awry.
[Snip]
The Census Bureau’s five Race and Ethnic Advisory Committees (REACs), representing communities of color that are at higher risk of undercounting in the census and other Census Bureau surveys, concurred with JAARP’s ‘no confidence’ statement with respect to Draftfcb’s creative materials for the 2010 census general campaign, at their biannual meetings held later in the week.”

Tell me why Joe Wilson's comment was racist?
Are you prepared to enforce the same standards of "decorum" that you would like to apply to Wilson to those who booed and heckled Bush's state of the union. Remember that there are tapes of the event.
