Socialists as Patriots

Why are some — mostly older, overwhelmingly white — Americans so afraid of “socialism” and, by extension, “socialized medicine”? One explanation is that they don’t actually know what socialism is, namely the public ownership and/or control of the major means of production (mines, mills, factories,
etc.) for the benefit of the public at large. Another is that many older Americans have vivid memories of the cold war and the dreaded U.S.S.R. (the second S standing for “socialist”).

It’s miraculous that Medicare got through Congress at the height of the cold war.
In hindsight it seems strange and almost miraculous that at the height of the cold war a limited form of socialized medicine — Medicare — got through the Congress over the objections of the American Medical Association and the insurance industry, and made it to President Johnson’s desk. (These special interests won’t make that mistake again: they now have a veritable army of lobbyists assaulting Capitol Hill and every congressman there.)

But now the cold war is over. For those in their 20s and 30s, the cold war might as well be ancient history.

To many Americans “socialism” may sound vaguely “foreign” and “un-American.” Those at rallies protesting health reform now may be surprised to know that “socialism” and “socialist” have a long history in American political thought and that those terms weren’t always terms of censure.

Close

For the anti-socialism protesters, here’s a quick quiz:

The author of the Pledge of Allegiance (1892), was A) a conservative, B) a liberal, C) a socialist.

The answer is C. Francis Bellamy was a socialist and a Baptist minister. (Yes, there actually were Christian socialists, then as now.)

The “Pledge to the Flag,” as it was originally called, was not descriptive of then current conditions, but it was aspirational: “One nation, indivisible” invoked a nation undivided by differences of race, class and gender. And “with liberty and justice for all” it envisioned a nation in which women could vote and African Americans need not fear rope-wielding “night riders” of the KKK.

Contemporary “patriots,” I hope, agree with such aspirations, despite their distinctly socialist provenance. It is historically false that the only “real” Americans are conservatives and that people of other ideological persuasions are not or cannot be “real” Americans. After all, what’s more American than the “socialist” Pledge of Allegiance?

Senate de-funds ACORN, but seven stand by them (Wswhington Examiner)

The Senate has voted overwhelmingly to strip ACORN of funding in the Transportation/Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill.

After ACORN workers were caught on tape in three cities allegedly abetting what they believed was a fraudulent mortgage and sex-trafficking scheme, only seven senators were willing to stand by them:

ACORN Story Grows But Mainstream Media Refuse to Cover It (Fox Forum)

This story has everything you could ever want – corruption, sleazy actions at tax-funded organizations, firings, government ties, sex, hookers. It is a network news director’s dream.
Imagine the ratings!

Only almost no one is covering it.
This is the news media in the era of Van Jones and President Obama.

The major outlets cover what they want and create the themes they want. When they find something inconvenient, they let it pass.

They didn’t like the Van Jones story, so they ignored it. The network news media liked the financial entity known as Fannie Mae, so they ignored that scandalous organization for years. ACORN is getting the same treatment.

New Zealand Tops CNN in ACORN Reporting (The Hippo's Ass Blog)

For the third time is less than 6 days, a video showing ACORN workers giving advice to a pimp and a prostitute was released by the good folks over at BigGovernment.com.

This video features New York City ACORN workers giving advice on how to hide prostitution profits in a tin can buried in the back yard, how to lie when applying for a housing loan and ways to shelter the money for tax purposes.

The New Zealand Herald actually put out a story on the third video before CNN did. (The last article on CNN.com about ACORN was four days ago.)

Not only does New Zealand make a great setting for Middle Earth, they also know when to call a scandal a scandal, unlike some of our more prominent news organizations here in the United States.

VIDEO: Rangel targets NY Post (Politico)

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) was asked about his failure to disclose about $700,000 in assets this weekend in Harlem by my pal Azi Paybarah of PolitickerNY -- and responded by saying he was a victim of a New York Post smear campaign.

The charming, churlish House Ways and Means chairman, who is the subject of several ethics committee probes, blasted away at the Murdoch-owner tab -- even though the disclosure story was reported by POLITICO and other news outlets.

"I think it's totally unfair for the New York Post to send investigative reporters to my family's homes and to do that type of thing," he said during a rally in Harlem over the weekend.

"I guess it's all selling papers."

Sorry, Charlie (NY Post responds to tax-cheat Rangel's lashing out)NY Post

Rep. Charlie Rangel is upset at The Post's reports of his various trans gressions. So here's a word of advice: Stop committing them, Congressman.

Rangel lashed out at The Post last weekend for its role in exposing his shady finances, failure to pay taxes, dubious fund-raising, illegal use of a House garage and on and on.

"I think it's totally unfair for the New York Post to send investigators to my family's home," he huffed.

Obviously, he's miffed -- for starters -- by the paper's pictures and stories of his secret Caribbean rental property, which he failed to disclose to Congress and on which he failed to pay taxes.

But The Post's reporting has proved 100 percent accurate -- buttressed, in fact, by reports from other news outlets.

There have also been reports about his countless other schemes: his four rent-stabilized apartments, for instance, and his apparent pay-to-play deal involving a City College center named for him.

"I want to maintain the good name, honesty and integrity that I've enjoyed for over 50 years," Rangel added.

Fine. Then start living up to that goal.

Everyone agrees: the mainstream media is biased, inaccurate (Hot Air)

The newspaper industry has done a lot of griping about the loss of their business model, but perhaps that has more to do with the loss of their credibility than with new technology.

The latest survey on news media from Pew Research shows that Americans have the lowest opinion of the mainstream media in the entire time that Pew has polled on the subject.

And now Democrats are almost as likely as Republicans to complain about bias in news reporting:

A million march to US Capitol to protest against 'Obama the socialist' (dailymail.co.uk)

As many as one million people flooded into Washington for a massive rally organised by conservatives claiming that President Obama is driving America towards socialism.

The size of the crowd - by far the biggest protest since the president took office in January - shocked the White House.

Obama Speaks To 15,000 While Ignoring 2 Million (radioviceonline.com)

On April 15 when Americans held TEA Parties across the country, President Obama said he really didn’t notice them.

Knowing that there was a large rally planned for Washington Saturday, rather than repeat his feigned ignorance of the April 15 rally, the president decided it was better “to get out of Dodge”.

So, rather than staying in Washington to find out what 2 million people thought about his health care plan, the president determined it was better to leave Washington to push his agenda on a friendly audience.

This time his “pep rally” was in Minnesota, before an audience of 15,000.

Leftwing Blogosphere Dreams Up Bizarre Conspiracy Theories to Explain Away DC 9/12 Time Lapse Video (NewsBusters)

The leftwing blogosphere has been trying to convince themselves and others that the attendance at the 9/12 Washington, D.C. Tea Party was fairly small.

However, there is one really big problem for them. How to explain away a highly inconvenient time lapse video from a camera showing massive numbers of Tea Party folks parading down Pennsylvania Avenue (video below the fold).

The way they get around to explaining away what our lyin' eyes tell us on that video is to devise the most hilarious set of conspiracy theories you can imagine.

Why is flag in the video at half staff? How come it is suddenly at full staff? Why does a man appear and suddenly disappear in the video? The flag flap doesn't match the wind speed. Etc., etc., etc..

I could go on and on explaining their bizarre conspiracy theories but please allow your humble correspondent to present them in their own highly entertaining and comedic words which you can also see at the Democratic Underground and the Daily Kos.

Washington Examiner's Carney Rips MSNBC Host David Shuster On Air for Denigrating 9-12 March (Newsbusters)

You might have figured this was coming, that when dust settled from the Sept. 12 march on Washington, D.C., the brain trust at MSNBC would attempt to frame it as negatively as possible.

And MSNBC's resident left-wing curmudgeon-in-training David Shuster didn't disappoint.

The former host of the canceled "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" took a report from the Huffington Post debunking attendance figures and attempted to belittle the event.

The story focused on an old photograph that had been circulating on some minor conservative blogs showing a huge crowd for the Sept. 12 march.

Shuster asked Washington Examiner columnist and author of "The Big Ripoff: How Big Business and Big Government Steal Your Money" if some conservative blogs were going to circulate a phony photo, why should the movement have any credibility?

But Carney didn't take the bait and instead showed that MSNBC and other mainstream media outlets were committing a similar offense.

Georgia newspaper company files for bankruptcy

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Newspaper publisher Triple Crown Media Inc., which owns daily and weekly newspapers in Georgia, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

In a prepackaged filing Monday in Delaware bankruptcy court, the Lexington, Ky.-based company listed assets of about $33 million, and liabilities of about $86 million.

Triple Crown operates six daily Georgia newspapers and one weekly with a total daily circulation of about 95,000.

The company, which has about 330 employees, announced early last year that it was cutting its work force by 5 percent because of the economic downturn and increased paper and fuel costs.

This filing makes Triple Crown at least the 11th newspaper publisher to seek bankruptcy protection over the past year.

Valerie Jarrett: The Next Van Jones---and Obama/Jarrett friend Marilyn "guerrilla nail" Katz
(FrontPageMagazine.com)

“We have kind of a mind meld,” Jarrett said about Obama. “And chances are, what he wants to do is what I’d want to do.” Chicago tycoon Martin Nesbitt identified the source of Jarrett’s power in the fact that she establishes both Michelle and Barack’s “whole notion of authenticity.”

Nesbitt relates she channels the Obamas’ inner voice, telling them: “That’s not you. You wouldn’t say that. Somebody else is saying that. Barack Obama wouldn’t say that.”

Jarrett admitted to Vogue, “I kind of know what makes them who they are.”

Who is this person to whom Jarrett is so indebted – and who, we shall see, she calls a personal friend?

Marilyn "guerrilla nail" Katz provided “security” for Students for a Democratic Society at the 1968 Democratic Convention.

That year (1983), Katz became an organizational entrepreneur herself, founding MK Communications, Inc., a public relations firm.

Its clients include the ACLU, Amnesty International, Chicagoans Against War & Injustice, Harold Washington 1983-1987 Mayoral Campaign, Lloyd Doggett’s senate campaign, Human Rights Watch, Illinois Campaign for Choice, Illinois Coalition Against the Death Penalty, the socialist publication In These Times, the MacArthur Foundation, Mother Jones, National Community Development Initiative (for the Rockefeller Foundation), UAW Local 719, and numerous City of Chicago accounts.

Katz had a few other noteworthy clients: Project Vote, the ACORN-affiliated voter registry that first brought Barack Obama to Chicago as a “communist organizer”; the Habitat Company; The Joyce Foundation, on whose board Obama sat; and History Makers, which interviewed Valerie Jarrett, her mother, and her father-in-law.

Barack Obama Painted Living Room Rather Than Visit Ground Zero On 9-11 (Gateway Pundit)

CBS News reported, via FOX Nation:
In a few months time, some family is going to be able to boast that the living room of their refurbished home was painted by the President and Mrs. Obama.

Wielding paint rollers and brushes, the Obamas laid down an even coat of "Cool Platinum" wall paint.

"you know, I don't think anyone will have to re-do it, I hope," said Mr. Obama as he finished one section of the back wall and stepped back to assess his work.

The First Couple was commemorating the 8th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, which this year is designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Families 'Kept In The Dark' As Doctors Make Life-or-Death Decisions (London Times (UK)

End-of-life care is the cause of many complaints

One in four families are not informed when doctors decide that a patient in hospital is dying under a widely used NHS scheme for palliative care, a national audit has found.

Less than half of terminally ill patients and their relatives are offered religious or spiritual support in their final days and hours, while a quarter of doctors are not being trained within hospitals to deal with dying patients.

The audit, seen by The Times, comes after the NHS was accused of having a “tick-box culture” of care that defines patients as dying without questioning whether they might recover.

The criticism relates to the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP), which is endorsed by the Government and many healthcare professionals as the best way to improve treatment for dying patients with cancer or other illnesses. About 20,000 people are estimated to die each year while being cared for under the guidelines.

We Need "Big Government" PATTERICO

BigGovernment.com, that is, as it single-handedly takes on ACORN.

Today’s highlights are videos documenting James and Hannah’s visit to ACORN’s Brooklyn office as they continue to seek housing assistance for their brothel:

Big Government says it will continue to do the job the mainstream media won’t:

“In fact, in the coming days, you’ll learn a lot about the full ACORN story. It is an amazing story, in its own way.

After waiting years for the mainstream media to finally peel back the ACORN layers, Big Government will have to take it upon itself to do so.

To start this, we are publishing an internal quasi-employee manual Big Government has obtained. Given to all ACORN employees, it isn’t your normal manual. It doesn’t discuss things like sick leave or vacation time, but, rather, as the title states, the “Principles and Foundations of ACORN.”

How an organization communicates with the public is important. How it communicates to its own employees, however, provides a richer understanding of an organization’s nature.

The whole thing is worth a read. I draw your attention to just one sentence (ACORN emphasizes it with italics):

ACORN’s lifeblood is conflicts with targets outside the organization.

Think about that. ACORN’s lifeblood isn’t empowering disadvantaged communities nor lifting people out of poverty.

It isn’t concerned about increasing economic growth to improve the lives of its members.

It’s lifeblood is conflict.

Conflict with targets. It actually thinks of the world outside itself as targets.

It explains a lot:”

MSNBC / White House CONCEDES Wilson was RIGHT on Illegal Aliens and Health Care Reform (MSNBC)

THE WHITE HOUSE NOW ADMITS (BEGRUDGINGLY) JOE WILSON WAS RIGHT.

From NBC's Mike Viqueira The White House tonight is providing the below clarification on what the president's health-care proposals would mean when it comes to the issue of illegal immigrants.

The question, as we all know, arises from the Wilson "You lie" outburst, and the core claim that notwithstanding specific bill language barring illegal immigrants from participating in the "exchange," as a practical matter, there is no way of verifying the citizenship of applicants -- which is the current state of play.

Republicans say that then means illegal immigrants would end up being enrolled in plans -- bill language or no bill language.

Today, for the first time as far as we know, the administration is backing a provision that would require proof of citizenship before someone could enroll in a plan selected on the exchange.

Aceh passes adultery stoning law

The law also imposes severe sentences for rape, homosexuality, alcohol consumption and gambling.

Sharia law was partially introduced in Aceh in 2001, as part of a government offer to pacify separatist rebels.

A peace deal in 2005 ended the 30-year insurgency, and many of the former rebels have now entered Aceh’s government, which enjoys a degree of autonomy from the central government in Jakarta.

In Violation of the Constitution: Obama Takes On Chairmanship of UN Security Council

Some unprecedented news today, folks. Never in the history of the United Nations has a U.S. President taken the chairmanship of the powerful UN Security Council. Perhaps it is because of what could arguably be a Constitutional prohibition against doing so. To wit: Section 9 of the Constitution says:

No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.

Barack Obama will cement the new co-operative relationship between the US and the United Nations this month when he becomes the first American president to chair its 15-member Security Council.

Norah O'Donnell: ACORN Video 'Might Be Viewed As Entrapment' (NewsBusters)

But entrapment in criminal law, is the act of LAE ENFORCEMENT officers or government agents inducing or encouraging a person to commit a crime when the potential criminal expresses a desire not to go ahead.

It's turning into quite the morning for NBCers to defend the left on Morning Joe . . .

First, Chuck Todd flatly rejected the notion that the MSM failed to adequately report on Van Jones, suggesting coverage would have been a waste of time.

Later, Norah O'Donnell came on and suggested that the video of the ACORN employees giving advice on how to evade the tax laws in setting up a brothel with young illegal aliens "might be viewed as entrapment."

House GOP to call for total cutoff of federal funds to ACORN (Senate Voted to Cut off ACORN Housing Funds 83-7) HOW WILL TAX CHEAT CHARLIE RANGEL VOTE?

Today House Republicans will introduce a bill that would end all federal funding to ACORN and its affiliates. Republicans are also sending a letter to President Obama on the same subject.

The action comes after the release, on the website BigGovernment, of three undercover videos showing ACORN employees in Baltimore, Washington DC, and New York City offering advice on how to evade taxes, cover up prostitution activity, and abet the use of minors in prostitution.

In the wake of those disclosures, the U.S. Census cut its ties with ACORN, and yesterday the Senate voted 83-7 to cut off housing funds for the organization.

House Republicans point out that they have long pushed for a cutoff in government funding for ACORN.

Republican leader John Boehner last year sent a letter to President Bush asking for the defunding of ACORN.

There is already Republican legislation calling for the total cutoff of Housing and Urban Development Department funds to ACORN, and Rep. Darrell Issa, the ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, took a leading role in pushing for the Census Bureau decision.
