Weak link!... new study shows SacBee site has captured just 8.3% of market

Management at the Sacramento Bee has got to be worried by a study published today by Internet Broadcasting which shows the Sacramento Bee has captured just 8.3% of the Sacramento internet market.

The Internet Broadcasting study tracks the reach of newspaper and TV sites in their local markets.

If I'm reading the chart correctly, the Bee has dropped a whopping 22% since April of this year.

The good news for the Bee is Sacbee.com is still the dominant news site in the Sacramento market. But the numbers show a weakness that leaves the door wide open for TV sites to advance.

"It's just that darn economy", Melonee Sill

These results won't impress local Sacramento companies deciding where to spend ad dollars.

But.. But..

Sacramento Bee claims to be the most important news and information source in the region.

Says so in their mission statement.

Nothing biased about the results from a company called Internet Broadcasting, is there? Your bias in publishing this story is quite apparent. Shame on you.

Sounds like Steve's butt is on the line with these lousy numbers.

To Steve - Fitz & Jen over on Editor & Publisher had a posting with a link to the same online site market penetration data - so I guess they are citing biased sources too?
That 8 percent does seem awful low for a heavy online market like Sacramento. I like SacBee.com. Maybe they need to market it more? In any case, not good news for SacBee and I'm sure they're talking about it down at corporate headquarters.

This is good stuff. Miami and Charlotte are low, too. McClatchy better get off their asses and figure out how to sell their web sites to the public. Nobody in their ad-mind would make a buy and pay any good money for those crappy numbers. How in the hell did a TV station in Salt Lake City get 43 percent of the market? That's crazy good.

Anon 3:34 Probably by telling the truth with their news.

McClatchy would kill to keep this chart out of the hands of advertisers. Talk about a stake in the heart of the old bloodsucker.

Maybe Melanie Sill could have a man to man talk with the advertisers.

Of course they'll buy her "It's that darn economy" argument.

Won't they?

So if internet is the future of newspapers....then the future looks like....

McClatchy successfully drove away readers with their biased paper.

Did they actually expect their insulted readers would bother to go to their new and improved biased website?

Even if it’s for free...for now.
Yes, they’re going to charge to visit their site that no one in Sacramento trusts or goes too?

Best of luck with that one!

This actually makes pretty good sense. Most major-market newspapers have penetration rates of around 25-30%, and websites typically are not as strong as the print products (often only 20% of the reach). That a SLC TV station has that much of an advantage is either very impressive or an oddity (such as a church-owned station).

What would be more interesting to look at is how well the newspaper website does against its competitors in the market, not the total market share.

For the few who actually have competitors.
