Charlotte Observer hiring freelance writers

The Charlotte Observer is looking for freelance science writers. Check out this post on the Observer's Facebook page:

Are you a freelance science writer or know somebody who is? The Observer is looking for NC-based freelancers interested in writing science stories for the paper. Particularly looking for people with a background in journalism; who have existing contacts at NC universities and colleges and who have strong clips.

Freelancers will be used in droves in the coming year. You don't have to pay them benefits and McClatchy pays very poorly for freelance work. Look for full-time positions to be hacked.

The ADN has an ad for freelancers also.
They are going to publish a piece of crap
magazine that sucks revenue and will
eventually lead to more layoffs.

Citizen journalist is the new name for "freelance journalist." You hire no-talent hacks and order your reduced-salary copy editors to rewrite the garbage so it makes some sort of sense. Yet another avenue to the slow death of professional journalism.
