Pelosi says Afghanistan is the main front in the war on terror... but Bin Laden's top deputy disagrees

Nancy Pelosi gave another reminder this week why Democrats can't be trusted on national security. She appeared on The Larry King Show and declared Afghanistan, not Iraq, is the main front in the global war on terror. Here is the transcript:
KING: All right. But you became the majority -- your party became the majority in the House primarily pledging to end the war. That didn't happen.

PELOSI: No.

KING: Why didn't it happen?

PELOSI: It didn't happen because we had hoped that the president would listen to the will of the people and at least be willing to compromise on some -- on how the war is conducted and some timetable for the redeployment of our troops -- a responsible, honorable and safe
redeployment of our troops out of Iraq in a way that brought stability to the region and more safety to the United States; that the president would realize that the real war on terrorism is in Afghanistan and this war in Iraq has taken the focus away from that; that this war in Iraq has not only cost us over 4,000 lives, enormous trillions of dollars and our reputation in the world, but has seriously undermined the capability of our troops to protect our interests wherever they are threatened again (INAUDIBLE)...

The only people who claim Afghanistan is the main front in the war on terror are anti-Bush Democrats. Certainly al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden's chief deputy, doesn't see Afghanistan as al-Qaeda's main front.

Zawahiri has said several times that Iraq is al-Qaeda's main front. Here is a summary of a recent message from Zawahiri, urging Muslims to hurry to Iraq to help al-Qaeda win:
He also used the two-and-a-half hour message to urge Muslims to join militant groups, mainly in Iraq, where he claimed that the insurgency against the Iraqi government and the US-led coalition forces is bearing fruit.

"I urge all Muslims to hurry to the battlefields of Jihad (holy war), especially in Iraq," Zawahiri said in the message, the second in a two part series to answer about 100 questions put to him via online militant forums."

The situation in Iraq heralds an imminent victory of Islam and the defeat of the Crusaders and those who stand under their flag," he said.

Nancy Pelosi is not a serious thinker on national security issues. But her public statements on Iraq are virtually identical to the other leaders of the Dem party, including Harry Reid, Howard Dean, Hillary Clinton, and, Barack Obama.

Barack Obama will be asked this question during the campaign, under intense scrutiny. If he says Afghanistan is the main front in the war on terror, he will have opened the door to massive assaults on his judgement and his ability to win the war on terror.
