Any to start a pool on who gets the next layoff?

Best candidates for next layoffs: the News & Observer, the Charlotte Observer, the Miami Herald, and the papers in the Northwest: the News Tribune, the Olympian, Bellingham Herald, Idaho Statesman, Anchorage Daily.

Any news regarding the future of McClatchy Interactive? I rarely see that company individually mentioned on your site.

Good question about McClatchy Interactive, I'll toss the topic out there and see if any information surfaces.

$10 on Fresno Bee. They have a flexo press and the plate cost is going to ruin McClatchy so they will print it at the Merced Sun Star and ship it to Fresno...YA THINK? Thats was one of the "big" factors in Modesto.

I'd also say any department in the McClatchy harem that is union is going to be looked at closely. Idaho Statesman and Modesto Bee Press rooms are union and look what happened to them. Prepress in Modesto decertified and are still working (so far). The guild is sort of safe as they need reporters and editors, although some of the editing can be done in India like they are doing the ad make up. Also anyone working for McClatchy for a long time that has risen in the ranks and making a good salary but their position is not vital (as in peons can do that job) are good candidates for the chopping block.
