McClatchy closes 2 weeklies in Illinois... one, the Pinckneyville Democrat, was 140 years old
The McClatchy-owned Belleville News Group will close the 140-year old Pinckneyville Democrat as well as the Journal-Messenger, two weekly newspapers. More here.
Didn't some astute individual get snark bombed and slandered by a McClatchy bot for suggesting this might be coming soon? This will certainly help to reach the magical 1600 victim goal. Who might that true genius have been?
I haven't located layoff figures for these 2 weeklies... it's possible the 30 layoffs announced for the Belleville News-Democrat includes employees laid off at these 2 weeklies. But maybe there are additional layoffs at the weeklies that haven't been announced. If anybody finds layoff numbers for these weeklies, send 'em in.
In smaller communities, once a newspaper is deemed dishonest, it is done. There is a major factor of trust being ignored, but if these papers subscribed to the AP, then all my questions are answered.
With the economy the way it is, management is not making any better decisions than our own government is. It's at the "throw something against the wall and see what sticks" principle. We simply can't keep doing the same old things. We'll get the same results and more people will lose their jobs.
Yes, but when you are an age old tentacle of an institutional cartel, the same old things are all you can do. Leadership is vested in lockstep behavior because that is what got them where they are. That is the danger in seeding an entire organization with fellow travelers.
