Tomorrow will be interesting

I'll be posting news as it comes in from any newspapers that make announcements tomorrow. Prime candidates for a Monday announcement: Biloxi Sun Herald, The Olympian, Tacoma's The News Tribune, Bradenton Herald, the Belleville News Democrat, and the Idaho Statesman. Also, I understand employees at other papers that have announced numbers (the Fort Worth Star Telegram, Kansas City Star) could learn their fate early this week.

The Olympian has already been raped for everything. What else is there to take?

I'm just imagining our publisher telling us that he will announce who will be laid off sometime before the end of the month. Until then, please, everyone, just keep up the great work that you are doing.

7:05 i know, right? "I really appreciate all of your hard work....except you, you, you, you, you, you, you & you. You all we're gonna learn to live without."

I am just finding so much pleasure in watching these liberals twist in the wind.

Welcome to the reality of life. Enjoy the unemployment line and your future personal bankruptcy filing.

It's not a conservative vs. liberal situation like some of you idiots are making it out to be. This is all (on a GLOBAL LEVEL) the result of bad and greedy decisions that were made a long time ago and that were still being made until this proverbial bubble popped and now we're all paying for it.

In the meantime, try having some compassion for your fellow man as they struggle through this.

For God's sake. The lack of compassion makes me ashamed to have brothers and sisters in human kind such as yourselves.

I don't think so. My compassion for McClatchy employees ended one or two rounds ago. I have never been able to get past a group at the Star posting the picture and address of someone's house who disagreed with them, for no other reason than to instigate harm against them.

Then there is the constant attempts to stir racial hatred, manipulate elections and defraud the public. Lets not forget hiding editorial and advertising in news. Nope, sorry. My sympathy lies only with the few pressmen, mailers, mechanics, carriers and other assorted "non key" personnel.

The rest of you can just get that which you so richly deserve. On your walk down to the unemployment office, if someone gives you the right directions, keep your head up, or your umbrella open. You have to walk under my window.

Its funny there a lot of republicans losing there jobs as well but some folks are a bit slow i guess.

Notice how they don't whine about it all the time though?

Uh, back to the subject matter here... they can do another round of cuts in June because there's still too many vice presidents and middle managers not doing anything.

I've been hearing about layoffs for the past several months. I got my phone call Sunday night to come in for the meeting Mon. afternoon. I am just relieved that it is finally going to be over. It would be nice if management could be upfront and honest instead of all of the hush, hush bs. Good luck to my fellow ex McClatchy employees.

Is it funny or sad? I guess it is just true. So many folks see the paper as the editorial content (news and opinion) it puts out. That is really a relatively small part of the whole story. There are the folks that make the money for the company (advertising) there are the folks that deliver the product (circulation), those that print it, those that lay it out, those that package it, those that drive it to the centers for the carriers, those that put it in the racks and the stores, those that handle all the accounting processes, those that keep the computer systems up and running and a bunch of others. Hate the liberal press if you want to, but don't forget about the others that may not share the editorial views you believe you see, but are every bit as impacted as those you hate.

Revel in the pending unemployment of folks if you must, but remember, the 'liberal' writer who is let go probably goes with one of your beloved 'conservative' capitalist from elsewhere in the building.

Lexington may hear something today. They scheduled a meeting Friday morning, then cancelled it and said they would rescedule it in the afternoon, then said monday. this emotional rollercoaster needs to stop.

9:19 & 12:16 -finally someone sees that there is more to the newspaper than the reporters & management-- hard working people who don't care about politics - they are just trying to feed their families and make their house payments. The way this matter is being handled is a shame. The KC Star management doesn't care at all about these people. My heart goes out to all of them -- those let go and those who will have to pick up the slack and wait for the next round of layoffs.

Instead of just sitting here whining and blaming the libs like so many of you do, we need to look at solutions. The fact of the matter is that these layoffs are an evil necessity given current conditions but they are going about it the wrong way.

All McClatchy is doing is cutting each paper by about the same amount (% of staff). This makes no sense to me. There are profitable papers out there and there are ones that are making no money. What sense does it make to cut staff 12% at a paper that has a positive cash flow? What they need to do is dump the papers that are losing money. I know that affects many of you and for that I'm sorry, but an across the board, even cut is just stupid and will not solve the problem of dead weight continuing to such the blood out of the profitable papers.

12:16AM, Thank You so very much for making that statement. It is the same point I was trying to make with my opinion about having compassion for those of us on the chopping block.

9:19 PM -- I'm not a journalist, I'm in fact one of the "non key" personnell you spoke of. Does that get me your compassion now?

Probably not, since apparently all you know how to do is go on the offensive. I'll be sure to share your sentiments with my spouse and children. I'll let them know that it is important to have people to look up to and to strive to be like. I'll also tell them that it's equally as important to see people that are lacking in compassion and heart so as to gain a valuable lesson in what NOT to become. I wonder which category you'll fall into?

You couldn't comprehend what the post said? You don't know where you fall within it when it is plainly stated?

Bradenton Herald was hit today. 16 total positions (8 were unfilled).

2 positions that I do not know about
1 Photographer
1 Copy Desk Editor
1 Finance Person
1 Press Manager
1 Ad Traffic Coordinator
1 Ad Services Employee

I pity the poor employees that will be staying...we are so lean right now that I cannot imagine how some areas will survive.
