MNI REPORTS THURSDAY.

“HULL BREACHED. EMPLOYEES BAIL WATER USING TEA BAGS”

NY Times Co. 1Q losses worsen as ad sales plunge 27 pct

The New York Times Co. says its first-quarter losses worsened amid a dramatic downturn in advertising revenue at its newspapers.

The setback announced Tuesday was even worse than pessimistic analysts had anticipated.

The publisher of The New York Times and The Boston Globe lost $74.5 million, or 52 cents per share, in the first quarter. That compared with a loss of $335,000 at the same time last year. That was break-even on a per-share basis.

WSJ "America's Newest Profession: Bloggers for Hire"

The best studies we can find say we are a nation of over 20 million bloggers, with 1.7 million profiting from the work, and 452,000
of those using blogging as their primary source of income.

Funny, the WSJ called it a PROFESSION. I wonder what MNI Marxists call it,... from the unemployment line?

"Capt. Gary asked for volunteers who would like to go for a swim and then extended the plank." This is humorous, but we have been saying these things all along.

Farewell to N&Oers tells the story of RMS McClatchy
Poynter Online (PDF file) | newsobserver.com

The mock front page designed for the 31 News & Observer staffers who are leaving the paper today says the RMS McClatchy -- one of the largest newspaper steamships in the world -- "was welded together from the hulls of several old steamships, including a leaky tub called the RMS Knight Ridder." Eventually, the steamship hit an iceberg and began to take on water. "Capt. Gary asked for volunteers who would like to go for a swim and then extended the plank." || Related: A terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

Oh horrors, the Pru will lose his personal touch with his source of music inspiration. Who knows what music will accompany his next speech? He seems to favor old guys, but what a decision? His head must be bursting with anxiety.

Calling stock experts- Market cap translation

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Newspaper publisher McClatchy Co. said Monday it's been warned that it could be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange unless it can lift its market capitalization to
[$75] million within 18 months.

Today the Market Cap: [$45.78M]

Does that literally mean raising the difference between these two numbers? That doesn't sound like all that much, if it does.

@12:33

Yes this was discussed elsewhere on the blog, but there are 2 requirements for listing.

1. Market cap of $75m
2. $1 average daily value (30 days)

McClatchy has until Dec 2009 to achieve #2 and until Dec 2010 to achieve #1.

Thus solving #2 will easily put us over #1.

For those of you DINOSAURS, and the new ones to join us:

What we did at THE FRESNO BEE..
The CORPORATION has changed drastically since ELEANOR
( McClatchy) died. She would come into the old building and know everybody by first name. Stated that "Coffee would NEVER be more than five cents a cup in the full service cafeteria, AND "LOCAL advertisers spend their money with us, so we WILL purchase everything locally from them.

All the retirees and newly let go people ( the ones who have been together many years) meet one moring every two months at a local Denny's to renew friendships, chat, and relive the good old days. We also find out who had "passed on" since the last meeting!
